Sway Control Only for an R-Pod 172 Trailer

Question:

Hi, I am looking to possibly add a sway bar part# 17200 to our R-Pod 172 to connect to our 2010 Mazda CX9 to help with some up coming highway driving. I am new to towing and what not so forgive me if this is a stupid question. Am I correct in reading that you can not reverse with a sway bar attached? If that is the case, is it easy to pop off or do you have to unhitch the trailer to get it off? Basically I am looking for something to make the drive a bit safer yet still be convenient if possible. Also, do you know if the mounting bracket would fit on an R-Pod frame without the screws being to close to the edge of the frame? I would like to avoid welding if possible. I am also open to other options if there is something you think that would work better. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

When using a friction style sway bar such as # 17200, as long as you are backing up in a straight line on level ground you can leave it in place. But If turning while backing up or on uneven terrain you would want to disengage the unit to avoid damaging it. So a good rule is just to disconnect it.

You will not have to disconnect the trailer and taking it off is quick and easy. Just release the tension then pull the pin on the trailer end bracket holding the bar on. Then pull it off.

This is the only sway control option that will allow this type of quick removal so it would be the best option. The plate that attaches to the trailer frame is 3 inches tall. This should not be a problem but you can measure the height of the frame just to be sure.

In addition to the sway bar you will need a sway control bracket for the ball mount you use. For a Class III or IV 2 inch hitch use bracket # RP26003. And for a Class II 1-1/4 inch hitch use # RP26005. I have included some links to the right that should also help.
