Recommended Weight Distribution System for R-Pod Trailer

Question:

I followed the links you sent me earlier. My concern is ground clearance. My 2015 Ford escape Did Not come with factory installed hitch. The dealer put a hitch that exits UNDER the bumper rather than through it. Without a trailer attached the bottom of the hitch is 11 of the ground. Both the Fastway e2 fa92-00-0600 and the Straight line rp66086 look to have very little ground clearance when installed. Am I ok to use them on my car as it is, or would I need a different unit? Or can I modify the way it connects? I currently am using a Buyers adjustable ball mount # 1803093 that raises my ball to currently 18 1/4 at the top of the hitch bar. Thanks again for your great advice in this matter.

For your R-pod travel trailer, the biggest issue you will face is sway , so I recommend he Strait-Line Weight Distribution System w Sway Control - Round Bar - 10,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # RP66086 which is rated for total tongue weight between 200 and 600 lbs. Total tongue weight includes not only the loaded trailer tongue weight, but also any cargo behind the rear axle of your 2015 Ford Escape. The hot rolled spring bars along with the dual cams make this the only system that actively fights trailer sway instead of correcting it when it occurs.

If you are looking for a more cost effective option, then I recommend the Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # FA92-00-0600. This is rated for a total tongue weight between 250 and 600 lbs.

Either system will need a hitch ball like the 2 inch diameter # A-90 or the 2-5/16 inch # 19286.

The Fastway e2 Weight Distribution w/ 2-Point Sway Control - Trunnion - 6,000 lbs GTW, 600 lbs TW # FA92-00-0600 will have better clearance than the Reese # RP66086 based on the use of trunnion bars versus round bars. You can use the Reese # RP66082 instead to give you slightly more clearance. You shouldn't have any issues with your hitch height and using these systems, but you will have less clearance based on the design of the Strait-Line system in just comparing them. You will want to make sure you tow your trailer level and you can use the shank of either system inverted to give you a rise versus drop if needed.
