Could the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002 get Hardwired to Battery with a Switch

Question:

I own a 2014 Dodge Caravan. With its multiplex wiring some RV dealerships are reluctant to add after market accessories that require tying in to existing wiring. The Dodge dealership itself has no problems with me providing power to any accessory by going directly to the battery. This would not void any warranty on the vehicles electrical system. I would be obliged to disconnect it myself prior to going in for warranty work. With regards to the Hopkins Smart Hitch back-up camera, can I splice the red wire directly into the battery and the black wire to a suitable ground? I know that by splicing into the vehicle back-up wire, the monitor would come on when I put the vehicle in reverse. I plan on dash mounting a simple on-off toggle switch inline on the power wire from the battery. This would allow me to control power to the back-up camera regardless of what drive gear I was in. Is this feasible? Thanks. You people do yeoman service on your site.

You can absolutely hardwire the Hopkins Smart Hitch Backup Camera # HM50002 to your vehicle battery through a switch to let you turn it on whenever you wanted. The red wire of the harness would need to get run to the positive side of your battery while the black wire would get run to the negative side of the battery.

For a switch you could use the Derale Switch part # D16740.
