Hi Ed,

In regards to the 3,500 lb Demco Hydraulic Brake Kit # 40716-15 and the Hydraulic Trailer Brake Kit # AKUBRK-35-D, starting with the country of origin, the Demco are made in the U.S. and the opposing brakes (made by AxleTek) are made in China. They are both designed for a boat trailer because of their corrosion resistance, but the better option is the Demco # 40716-15.

The reason for that is because they are free-backing brakes, which means you can back up without the brakes engaging, while the other option requires an actuator with a lockout.

The finish that better prevents corrosion is the Demco, as it is stainless steel along with being galvanized. The only other key difference is the hardware needed. The # AKUBRK-35-D needs Mounting Hardware # BRKH10B. The Demco # 40716-15 requires Mounting Hardware # BRKH10A.

Thanks Kyle. Is there a dwg or cut sheet that shows mounting center-center dimensions and hole sizes for the 40716-15? Looks like mine uses four 7/16” mount bolts in 0.450” holes that measure center-center 2.810” Will I need to mark and ream holes to get it to fit?

@Ed There isn't a drawing but the brakes fit a standard brake mounting flange that measures 2.75" on center such as # 4-35. The brakes do use the same size mounting bolts, however, which are 7/16".
