How to Connect Trailer Safety Chain Hooks to Ford F-150 Factory Safety Chain Loops
Question:
I have a Ford F-150 with the factory hitch. The opening for the tow hooks to attach is a 1 x 2 inch oval slot. Would the clevis hook for this chain fit in this slot and be able to move freely or would I need to add a shackle? If I need a shackle does etrailer have one that would work? My trailer chain attachment uses 1/2 in. diameter bolts with the last link sandwiched between a heavy washer and a steel plate welded to the trailer frame. Does this chain have 1/2 in. openings?

The best solution for your Ford F-150 is to get two of the Durabilt Hammerlock Coupling Link for 1/2" Chain # DU96MR. This style of link is a little difficult to install but it's very secure and is designed specifically for the size of chain your trailer is equipped with.
That 1" x 2" safety chain connection for your Ford OEM hitch has been a problem for Safety Chain Links like the part # TCTSCG70-842-06x1 you're looking at, but with the coupling link I referenced you'll be able to easily use this safety chain link.

I would expect that the hammerlock couplings would stay on the vehicle whether towing or not. They would probably rattle on any rough road without the safety chains holding them down. Would a large quick link have an opening large enough to accomodate the clevis hook? The offset of the tow hook slot from the outside edge is of the tow hook bracket is about 3/4 inch in 1/4 inch steel plate. The quick links could be more easily be removed when not towing than the hammerlock couplings so they would not be there to rattle.
