Why do Class 3 Curt Trailer Hitches For 2024 Subaru Outback Have Lower Ratings Than Previous Years

Question:

Hello- Im shopping for a hitch for my 24 Subaru Outback. Im confused between the Class 3 weight ratings and the hitch ratings. According to Curt, a class 3 is rated up to 800/8000. The class 3 13494 is only rated to 350/3500 which seems to match a class 2. Ive bought several Curts for my previous cars and they have had high weight ratings. Is the 13494 designed for the class 3 or class 2 spec? Thanks for clarifying.

The Class III hitches are measured by having a 2 inch hitch receiver and weight ratings between 3,500 lbs and 8,000 lbs, which is what both of the Curt hitches for your 2024 Subaru Outback are, the visible crosstube Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C69VV and concealed crosstube Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C67JR.

Both are rated for 3,500 lbs towing and 350 lbs of tongue weight like you mentioned. A Class II hitch can also meet those weight ratings, but the difference is a Class II hitch has a 1-1/4" receiver.

So the specs are correct for these hitches, and you can choose whichever style you like. Also, if you plan on towing and need a 4-flat harness, the correct fit for your '24 Outback is part # C56040.
