Everything was very well laid out and the instructions were easy to understand. I really appreciated the fish wire provided for the chasis bolts. Only issues I had was the two bolt circled. One due to the muffler and the other due to the bumper not completely aligning back. In all it worked out. I also didn’t realize I made a similar review for a hitch cover insert…. Awkward.

by:

25 minutes after placing my online order with etrailer I got a phone call from a representative, ensuring that all of my order was correct was in stock and was being packaged for shipment. I had all of the parts that I ordered three days later, and a verification email that it was delivered. etrailer Runs their business. The way every business should be run. They take care of their customers from beginning to end and today, one year after the purchase. I got an email from them to find out how things were going. Six stars.

by:

Pretty straightforward installation. The videos were very helpful - watched them twice and referred back during install.

by:

Overall, reasonably good experience. After a bit of confusion and delay, I found out they couldn't get their own branded hitch so I had to pay more for the Curt. It arrived packaged well and, with the help of their online videos, instruction was pretty simple. Nice, clean, and fairly hidden install. Would buy from eTrailer again.

by:

Install really wasn’t that hard. I do not consider my self “handy” and was still able to easily install the hitch with the video instructions. The appearance of having everything hid behind the number looks great. I’ve used the hitch a ton with my bike rack and have had no issues. Great Job!

by:

Having never put a hitch on a vehicle this was the easiest thing to do. Very thorough instructions and video on [online]. Estimated time was 2 hours, took me me little over 1 hour.

by:

Product seems to be of good quality, and insulation was smooth. But the product is just so poorly packed that it has no chance of arriving undamaged! There is zero internal packaging or insert to protect the hitch, and the box is far to shallow. The amount of damage to the hitch was very unfortunate. For almost XXX dollars you would think there would be a better effort to protect the hitch. Since I already removed the bumper I went ahead with installation, just did some sanding and touch up in multiple spots of the hitch. I will not be using etrailer for any future purchases!

It does sound like the hitch had a bit of a tough journey in shipping. I will pass this along to our shipping department. You have already done what we would have recommended in touching up the hitch with rust resistant paint. I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you.

by:

This is a great hitch! On the OBW though, you need to lower the mufflers to get to the bolts, just fyi. Not a big deal, but it is something to keep in mind. Pretty easy installation overall.

Don’t waste your money on a OEM outback wilderness hitch. This is pretty straightforward and the install instructions are easy to understand.

by:

Excellent hitch. Powdercoating was flawless, for was perfect, and trim template measurements for lower bumper trimming were spot on.

This is the first hitch I’ve installed myself, and it still only took 90 minutes!

Highly recommend for 21+ Outback!!

2023 Subaru Outback Wagon

It’s a hitch. It’s made out of steel. You can’t do much to it when shipping. It arrived clean and all in tact. Again, it’s a piece of steel, not much can happen to it. I’m happy as a clam that I can haul my raft with my new Curt trailer hitch receiver for my new 2023 Subaru Outback. Would totally recommend to anyone needing a hitch. Thanks etrailer, you rock

by:

Heavily built, nice welds, the kind of paint quality I would like to see on modern cars, built to last. Alignment to car spot on. Thanks!

by:

Excellent hitch receiver. Ordering and customer service were great. I like this one bec it allows you to use the factory impact beam, or structural part of the bumper. Installation was pretty easy. No issues, and no complaints. I would definitely recommend to a friend, and I’d buy the same one again.

Firstly, this is an excellent hitch. Secondly, although it is rated "difficult" to install, it really isn't. More likely, it is "intimidating" to those who have never had to pull a bumper cover. For me, this was the first time I have tried, and I was definitely intimidated. This is the 4th vehicle I have owned that I installed a hitch myself. I had intentionally avoided buying any hitches that required bumper removal. For my Outback, there was no such option. But again, just watch the video. It was as easy, if not easier than shown on the video.

So, overall, I rate the hitch itself as 5 stars. However, I am pulling a star due to two issues:

1- The hitch arrived without the fishwire. I called etrailer, and they DID ship them out to me for free. However, it took a day to get a shipping status, and they still haven't registered as actually being on the way. When I realized that I would not get them quickly, I ordered them overnight from Amazon. I got them in, my hitch is already installed, and the etrailer items are still at a status "label created - shipper awaiting pickup" So, while I appreciate that they were willing to ship, I kinda feel like the oversight should have been corrected with overnight shipping.

Secondly, and this is with ALL of the hitches I have installed, etrailer does not EVER simply state the torque values you need on the site before you order. Here is a recommendation (and I am sure it is not the first time this recommendation has been made), either list the specs on the page, or put a link to the actual install sheets. The video mentions you could purchase a torque wrench from etrailer if you do not have one. However, it never mentioned what the torque was. In this case, the torque is much lower than the wrench I needed for all my other hitches (For anyone looking for the values, there are two: 45 lb-ft and 59 lb-ft). Luckily, I have multiple wrenches, or I would have been heading back out to get a wrench. I am not sure why they won't post the install sheets or the specifications needed. That would be so much more helpful.

Again, those were minor inconveniences. But, they are worthy of note. This is a really good site for ordering what you need. If you know what to look out for ahead of time, you can avoid some of the inconvenience.

by:

Excellent quality. Install isnt bad. Bumper removal requires removing 7 platic fasteners and a fastener removal tool makes this pretty easy. Two of the fasteners (in the wheel well) have tiny center buttons that need to be pressed prior to prying them off. Four bolts and 2 nuts need to be removed from the car and they are easy to access with a 6 inch extender on your ratchet. Two of the provided bolts have to be dropped about 6 in into an opening and I used a wire attached to the bolt to do this. Follow the suggestion in the directions and temporarily tighten the hitch to the car for this step. The bumper needs to be cut, but it was easy with tin snips and the cut area is not visible after installation. I needed to drop my muffler to properly torque one of the bolts and this was easy, just two bolts. Very satisfied with this hitch.

by:

High quality hitch with a straightforward installation process from my driveway. This will allow me to haul small things and put a bike rack in the back for "easy on my back" bike removal. The video from etrailer was excellent in visually showing how to do the major steps and it helped me tremendously, thank you etrailer! This hitch didn’t require removing the exhaust system, did not require modifying the heat shield, nor require drilling the frame, and that made installation a lot easier to do. Cutting a notch in the bumper was easy with a Dremel. If I had to do it again, I would get the fishwire up front before installation instead of a do-it-myself solution for bolt routing. Taking off the whole bumper body looked intimidating to me at first, but I got through the process OK as it pretty much snaps back into place. Overall the installation process was good and I’m happy with the results.

2020 Subaru Outback Wagon

As a Shop teacher I tend to overbuild things. It would appear that Curt follows this philosophy as well. Their hitch that I installed on my Subaru is definitely overbuilt. Because of its beef it is likely that the back of the car is now stronger than it even was. Was it an “easy installation”? No it wasn’t. But the Curt instructions categorized the installation as “Difficult”. For me it wasn’t exactly that either. I would describe it as challenging. So how challenging was it? If you’re mechanically inclined, if you can take things apart, put them together and they work, if you like a little bit of a puzzle, if you have a pretty good set of mechanics tools - if this describes you, go for it! But HOW challenging? If you have ever disassembled a dryer to replace a drive belt and when finished it works - that can be a challenge the first time. This might be on par with that kind of difficulty. The wisdom of Curt to call it difficult? I would agree. Not easy, not impossible - as I said - challenging. Overall well thought out, very well made. A quality product that I will trust for as long as we own the car.

Subaru

Your rating for the install was 6/10. Since this was my first installation on a Subaru I will accept your rating but I found it quite easy. The only challenge was mental...having the courage to remove the bumper cover. The bolt up was easy. The videos could show how to get the cover back on, especially near the tail lights. It took a bit of wiggling to get the tabs on.

  • Which Hitch for 2021 Subaru Outback Wagon Requires Smallest Cuts in Rear Fascia
Due to the way the 2021 Subaru Outback Wagon is designed all of the hitches that fit it do require trimming of the rear fascia to install. The Curt # C67JR requires the smallest hole though so it would be what I would recommend.

  • How Does the Curt C67JR Install on a 2022 Outback Wilderness Edition?
We do actually have a video of the Curt # C67JR being installed on a 2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness! I have it linked below. You will not need to remove the bumper cover to get the # C67JR installed, but you will have to lower the exhaust and pop those "pushpin fasteners" out. This allows for the cover to be pushed forward enough to access the nuts holding the bumper beam in place. Once those are removed, it will actually be the exact same as installing on the standard Outback Wagon,...

There was a slight design change in the mounting brackets from the Curt 13437 (our part CU89FR) and the current fit 13494 , our part # C67JR. This was to accommodate for some of the differences in the newer model Outback Wagons where the hitch attaches to the vehicle.
