Trailer Wiring Harness for a 2014 Ford Explorer XLT Without the Factory Tow Package

Question:

I am going to order the Curt trailer hitch C13100 for my new 2014 Ford Explorer XLT which did not come with the towing package. I checked below the passenger rear tire and found the connection plug for the hitch wiring. Will the Curt Custom Fit C56172 Wiring Harness work with my Explorer?

You may be able to use the Curt T-Connector Wiring Harness, # C56172, on your 2014 Ford Explorer, but before buying the harness, I recommend testing the connector on your Explorer to make sure it works. Sometimes vehicle manufacturers will leave the factory trailer wiring in place, but they will not include the fuses and relays necessary to make the wiring active.

Using a circuit tester like part #PTW2993, test the pins in the factory connector while a helper runs through the taillight signals (turn signals, brake lights and running lights). If you have power at that connector, then you should be able to plug in the Curt T-Connector and have a fully functioning 4-flat trailer connector. I have attached an installation video for you to check out.

If you do not have power at the factory connector, then you may just have to install fuses and/or relays in the fuse box to activate the trailer wiring. Your owners manual or your fuse box legend should list the locations for the tow package fuses and relays. A local Ford dealer should also be able to identify the fuses and relays needed.

If it is not possible to install fuses or relays, then the only other option would be to install a hardwire kit like the Curt Upgraded Circuit Protected Wiring Harness, # C59496. This kit will splice into the vehicles tail light circuits and draw power from the vehicles battery to power the trailer lights.
