Is a 2-Inch Hitch Available for the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta Sportwagen
Question:
It appears youre saying that this vehicle cannot have a 2inch hitch system for some reason. Is that right? I have a 2inch hitch on my Nissan Leaf, so this surprises me somewhat.

The hitch receiver we offer for the 2005 Volkswagen Jetta Wagon can be seen on the link provided. I checked all model years from 2005 through 2014 for the Jetta Wagon and Sportwagen and only 1-1/4-inch Class I hitches are offered by the major manufacturers we represent.
I also checked the availability of hitch receivers for the Nissan Leaf for model years 2011 through 2014. There are no hitches offered by any of our manufacturers for this electric vehicle for any model year.
Hitch manufacturers design and rate their products based on the capacities of the host vehicle; if only Class I hitches are made for a vehicle this means that the frame structure where the hitch attaches cannot handle more stress than would be applied by a Class I hitch. If the major hitch manufacturers do not offer a hitch for a given vehicle it is due to their or the vehicle makers determination that there is insufficient structural strength to safely mount one.
Although there evidently are 2-inch hitches offered by other companies I suggest you refer to your owners manual (or speak to a local dealership) to ensure use of such a product will not void your vehicle warranty or cause damage. For reference I have included an article on hitch classes.
