This controller is needed to ensure the controller only activates when the air brakes are being used. This prevents any false braking as trucks with air brakes will also activate the brake lights when using exhaust brakes. If this happens you are likely to overheat and damage the brakes on your trailer. The brake light switch wire for this controller is optional since it relies on air pressure to activate the brakes.
