Troubleshooting A Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller That Keeps Activating On Its Own
Question:
I have a 2022 Jayco with an S2RV Chassis. The Hayes controller is installed and seems to work fine. But, I now get a ghost activation. When the RV is parked and off, trailer connection is unplugged. The trailer brake switch clicks. The light turns on, the handle moves ever so slightly and it clicks. Like someone is stepping on the brake VERY gently. Air tanks have air in them. Any ideas?

Aside from the paranormal, there wouldn't be a way for the manual override knob of the Hayes Air Actuated Trailer Brake Controller # HA100400C to move on its own. This leads me to believe that either the unit is defective, there's a tiny air leak that the controller is picking up and causing it to activate, or there's an issue with your brake light switch wire and it's getting power somehow and sending the signal to the brake controller.
I'd start by checking each connection (air & electric) for leaks, damage, or a loose connection. From there I'd check the brake red wire of the harness to see if it's getting 12v power without the brake pedal being depressed. Check the air line connections for your brakes with a bottle of soapy water to see if you get any bubbles. It could be a SUPER tiny leak since you're not noticing any issues when using the brakes. If you find no issues and the Ghost Busters don't find a ghost then the controller is probably defective so I'd reach out to Hayes to look into getting a warranty replacement.
