How Does a Relay and Trailer Break Away System Work

Expert Reply:
Relays are used basically as a switch and/or when a low voltage signal comes into the relay. Its also possible that the distance from the voltage source to the end unit could be long enough and the voltage and wire gauges small enough to necessitate a repeating signal from point A to B.
A breakaway system is basically a switch installed in line with the system so that if the pin is pulled, the contacts inside the switch touch to complete the circuit and send power from a trailer mounted battery to the brakes on the trailer. The output from the actuator to the trailer brakes would run through the break away system then from there to the trailer brakes.
I have included some links on break away systems for you to view.
