No Brakes On Trailer When Pin Is Pulled On Breakaway Switch

Question:

When truck is connected to trailer red light blinks.. Pull cable and no brakes.. What could be the issue.. thanks

I have attached a couple of helpful articles that explain how to install and test breakaway systems. I spoke with my contact at Hopkins and they told me that the light should not illuminate unless the cable has been pulled. Since you said the light is blinking when hooked up, it sounds like there may be a problem in the wiring. You can also test the battery to make certain it has a full charge.

If you do not have the breakaway system wired correctly, the brakes may not be getting the signal from the breakaway box.

I have attached a drawing that shows how the wiring should be attached when installing your breakaway system. You can use a circuit tester like part # 3808 to see if you are receiving current to the wiring on your system.

If you find your system needs to be replaced, I recommend a system that has an integrated battery like part # 50-85-313. This kit comes with the breakaway system along with the battery. It also features a button for testing the battery status. I have attached a product review video and an installation video you can take a look at.
