How to Identify a Trailer Connector on a 2009 Toyota Tundra

Question:

I am buying a trailer with a round 7 hole female plug. I have a 2009 toyota tundra with the standard tow package option. Will the plug at the end of the cord be a male 7 point round or will I have to get some type of adapter? I have not seen the cord or its plug. I am currently having a mechanic install the fifth wheel. I was hoping you might know something about this and if you cant help, perhaps have a refferal for me. Best regard

If your 2009 Toyota Tundra came with the factory tow package, then it should have a 7-way round trailer connector attached to the bottom of the rear bumper to the left of the trailer hitch (see photo). I recommend looking at the back of your truck to see if you have the factory 7-way trailer connector.

If your truck does not have a 7-way trailer connector and you are sure your truck was equipped with the factory tow package, there should be two connectors under the vehicle near the frame rail that you can use to install the Hopkins Custom Fit 7-Way Wiring Harness, # HM11143395. One connector will have 5 pins and the other connector will have 2 pins. If you cannot locate any factory connectors, the mechanic installing your fifth wheel hitch should be able to locate the factory plugs.

Since you are having a fifth wheel hitch installed, you may also want to pick up a fifth wheel/gooseneck wiring harness like part # HM43397 if you have the factory wiring harness connectors. This harness will tee into the factory 7-way connector and will be installed in the bed of your truck. Having a 7-way trailer connector in the bed of your truck will make it much easier to connect the wiring harness from your trailer.

As long as your truck came with a factory tow package, you will not need any additional adapters other than the products I mentioned above. If you want to install a brake controller like the Tekonsha Prodigy P3, # 90195, that you referenced, you can pick up the brake controller plug-in harness, # 3040-P. Your truck should have a white connector under the drivers side dash just above the emergency brake pedal (see photo) that you can plug the brake controller harness into without having to hardwire anything.

If your truck does not have the factory connectors for trailer wiring, then we will need to take a different route. You will first want to install a 4-way flat trailer connector using the Universal Curt Upgraded Circuit Protected Tail Light Harness, # C59496. This harness will splice into the trucks tail light wiring to provide the light functions. Next, you will want to install our Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controllers, # ETBC7. This kit comes with everything you need to install a 7-way trailer connector and a brake controller on your truck. I have attached the installation instructions for both wiring kits as well as an installation video of the ETBC7 on a 2002 Toyota Tundra to give you an idea on what is involved with the installation.
