Advantages to a Spread Axle Trailer over a Tandem Axle
Question:
I am building a custom trailer and considering going with a spread axle setup for stability and to reduce tongue weight. I am considering a spread of 82inch between hub centers on a 24foot overall length trailer. The trailer will be a 14K GVW dump. Can you share with me the pros and cons of such a setup

Expert Reply:
Spread axle trailers are pretty hard on tires when you are turning since the front tires will scrub and wear out quickly, also they are much harder to back up and are harder on suspension components.
Spreads do have a little more flexibility with loading and in some areas can carry more weight, but that is something you would need to check your local DOT laws to confirm.
