Does a Sidewinder Put Too Much Stress on Trailer Towed by a 2014 Ram 1500 Short Bed

Question:

My problem is that the Ram 2013 and 2014 shortbeds have no options for a slider hitch from ANYBODY as yet. Sooo, Im looking at the Reese sidewinder hitches but have been advised that although the hitch might be fine, the stress it puts on the pin box by reaching out is a problem. I hate to cut into the skin to reinforce the frame but that sounds prudent. I know it would happen over time but since you cant see the possible damage slowly happening hidden by the skin of the trailer, there may be surprise down the road. Am I being paranoid. Of course Reese is going to say dont worry but its only logical. Force and leverage? Thx.

First, if you have the very short bed, less than 6 feet long, then you would have to use a Sidewinder in order to make tight turns. Even then, sometimes the 22 inches of extra clearance is not enough depending on how wide the trailer is. On regular short beds where a slider could be used, a Sidewinder can also work and will provide a better ride than a slider hitch would.

What you are saying about stress to the trailer is true. You will have to check with the trailer manufacturer to determine if the trailer can even be used with a Sidewinder. But first, you will need to determine if there is a Sidewinder available for your trailer. You will need to get the pin box manufacturer and model number off of a sticker or plate on the pin box.

Then use the FAQ I have linked and the chart on it at the bottom of the page to determine if there is a Sidewinder available. If there is, then you would call the trailer manufacturer to see if it can be used. And then you can look for a 5th wheel hitch. For a 2014 Ram 1500 I recommend installation kit # RP30035-386.
