Are Self Adjusting Brakes Worth the Extra Cost Over Manual Adjusted Brakes On Dexter 6,000LB Axles?
Question:
I need replacement brake assys for my tandem axle 6K 5th wheel. My neighbor recommended self-adjusting brakes. Do these work well? Do they need initial adjustment? How about the install hardware? Is it included?

Expert Reply:
The Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-458-459 that fits your 6,000lb axle is a great option over the Standard Dexter Electric Brake Kit # 23-105-106. The Nev-R-Adjust brakes will adjust themselves as the pads wear ensuring that you retain consistent and even brake feel. This not only saves you time having to adjust your manual brake every 3,000 miles but also gives your brakes and hubs a longer life since it ensures braking is even spread across all the brakes.
While the brakes can be adjusted when initially installed it is not required. I only recommend any initial adjustments be made by a professional as if they are over adjusted it is difficult to readjust the brakes. These brakes will include the nuts to install them on the studs for your brake flange.
