How Can I Transport My 320 Sport Bike on My 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe?
Question:
Hi, I have a 2013 Hyundai Santé Fe Sport with the standard 1 1/4 hitch. I would like to carry my 320lbs dual sport bike on a hitch hauler carrier like this. I would need to change the factory hitch for a class 3, so would this one be a good fit? Would that kind off weight be too heavy for the car suspension? If so, I would like to know what assembly you would recommend. I was sceptic that a bolted hitch could have a 900lbs tongue weight capacity.

I have a way for you to safely transport your dual sport bike on your vehicle. I went ahead and looked up the specs for your 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe, and it has a maximum gross towing weight capacity of 2,800 pounds. If this is the case, the maximum tongue weight capacity of your vehicle is 280 pounds.
With this tongue weight capacity, you cannot safely mount via a hitch carrier that requires tongue weight. This is because no matter what hitch you use, your sport bike exceeds that 280 tongue weight rating.
All that being said, you can still transport the bike with a utility trailer. This is because it utilizes the 2,800 pounds of towing weight instead of using the tongue weight. With this option, you can still use your 1-1/4" hitch as long as it provides you with enough gross towing weight capacity for the combined weight of the 320 pound bike and the trailer. For the small trailer, I recommend the Detail K2 Mighty Multi A-Frame Utility Trailer - 7-1/2' Long - 1,640 lbs # K2MMT5X7 or the Detail K2 Mighty Multi Utility Trailer - 6' Long - 1,295 lbs # K2MMT4X6. It is important to note that you need to get a ramp like the # 288-07452 if you decide to go with the # K2MMT5X7.
With the 6' long trailer, you need a 1-7/8" ball like the # C40001 along with a ball mount like the # BM96. For the 7-1/2' trailer, you need a 2" ball like the # A-90.
In addition to the ball/ball mount, you need to have a 4-way harness set up on your Santa Fe in order to utilize the trailer's tail lights. If you need a connation, I recommend the Curt T-Connector Vehicle Wiring Harness for Factory Tow Package - 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # C56332 (if you have a factory tow package) or the Hopkins 4-Pole # HM11143984 (without factory tow package).
For mounting the bike, I recommend a wheel chock like the Tow-Rax Removable Wheel Chock w/ Wood Screws - 6-1/2" Wide Tires # TWSPWM along with the metal floor mounting hardware # TWSPWFKM. This chock comes with hardware to bolt onto the floor of the trailer. For straps to secure the bike, I recommend the ratcheting straps # 348349.
As far as a hitch, the etrailer Hitch - 2" # e98841 will absolutely give you the weight capacity you need because you can fully utilize the entire gross towing weight capacity of your vehicle. If you do decide to go with the etrailer hitch, you will need to purchase a compatible ball mount for the hitch like the # C74WR.
