Should I Get The Factory Towing Package Or Go With An Aftermarket Set Up On A 2022 Chevy Traverse?

Question:

I am looking at trading in my Malibu and getting the new 2022 Traverse so I can pull a little camper into the mountains. The question I have is, do I get the factory towing package, or do I go with an aftermarket set up? This is pretty new to me and I am debating on which way to go. Could definitely use some insight.

If you are looking at upgrading to a 2022 Chevy Traverse specifically so you can start towing a camper, I highly recommend going with the aftermarket set up. Not only will this be quite a bit less expensive, these will tend to be longer lived than what comes from the factory as they are specifically built to last. Having a towing package also does not mean the vehicle can tow more than non-towing models, so I say save the money.

Especially since the American made Curt # CU29FR hitch will install exactly where the factory hitch would. This means that when it isn't in use, you can completely cover it with the bumper panel (picture included). So no ugly receiver tube sticking out all the time. The wiring therein becomes hidden as well, but you have two options here and it will depend on if you need a 4 Flat (no trailer brakes) or a 7 Way (trailer has brakes).

Both options I have listed below will attach to the No-Drill Mount # 18140, which then attaches to the cross tube of the hitch for quick and easy installation. And did I mention that both of these wiring harnesses are plug and play? Not only are the longest lived products out of all the brands we carry, they will be quick and easy installs that fit into a factory port.

4 Flat Option:
Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness With 4-Flat # 118761
Mounting Bracket 4-Pole Flat # 18144

7 Way Option:
Tekonsha T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 7-Way # 118287
Mounting Bracket and Installation Hardware - 7-Pole # PK12711U

The last things you will need are a ball mount, ball, and a pin and clip to hold everything in the hitch. The etrailer.com Ball Mount Kit for 2" Hitches # 989900 tends to cover just about every vehicle and trailer and comes with all these parts, and even a carrying/storage bag.

If the trailer you end up does have brakes, go with the 7 Way option as you will need a brake controller. For this, the Curt Echo # C51180 is highly recommended. This is easy to install and will plug right into the 7 Way. Other than needing to download the app on your smartphone to set it up, that's it. I do always recommend the Manual Override Button # C83HR along with this so you don't have to rely on your phone for the manual override function, but it is not 100% necessary.
