Parts Needed to Flat Tow a 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 Behind a Motorhome
Question:
I have a 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 4x4 I would like to flat tow behind motorhome. I found out it can be flat towed but having trouble locating all the parts I would need to put on truck to do so. Is there a base plate and kit that has all parts? Maybe a list of all i would need? I recently got anti sway bars from you and finally found an installer that will do those. Next is the truck Thanks

We have exactly what you need to flat tow your 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 behind your motorhome. We do not have an all inclusive kit that has everything, but what I can do is list each part that you will need. I will also include a brief description of what it is for and a recommendation for each part. A flat tow set-up will consist of at least 5 parts. You will need a base plate kit, tow bar, safety chains, tow bar wiring and supplemental braking system.
Base Plate Kit: This is going to be custom fit for your vehicle and is what the tow bar coming from the motorhome will attach to. I recommend the Roadmaster Direct-Connect Base Plate Kit # 3154-3 which will let you use a direct connect tow bar. These are also made in the USA and have a limited lifetime warranty.
Tow Bar: This is what will attach to the motorhome and then attach to the base plate kit to tow your Sierra. I recommend the Roadmaster Nighthawk All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-676. This tow bar is compatible with the base plate kit recommended above and has enough weight capacity to handle your Sierra. It is made in the USA, has a limited lifetime warranty and has a non-binding design allowing you to release your vehicle even on uneven ground. This tow bar also includes the safety chains so you will not need to purchase them separately.
Tow Bar Wiring: This is what allows you to use your GMC Sierra's tail lights and wiring system while preventing feedback from your RV. I recommend the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267. This kit is made in the USA and has a limited lifetime warranty.
Supplemental Braking System: This is what is going to allow you to travel with and safely stop your Sierra while flat towing. I recommend the Demco Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # DM86VR which will provide you with an automatic proportional braking system that never has to be removed, replaced, or reset. This system is made in the USA and has a 5 year warranty.
You may need a high-low hitch adapter, you need your tow bar to be within 3" of level. If it is not, you will need an adapter. I have included a help article that goes over how to determine if an adapter is needed and which one you need if it is determined you need one. I have also linked our selection of high-low adapters so you can select the correct one if it is determined that one is needed.
Lastly, you will want to consult the Owners Manual of your 2013 GMC Sierra 1500 to be sure you are following all of the manufacturer requirements and recommendations for flat towing your Sierra.
