What Gear Ratio is Best for Towing with a 2019/2020 Ram 3500

Question:

I’m looking at a RAM 3500 Longhorn to pull a fifth wheel 40’ trailer. This vehicle has a 3.93 rear differential. Will I have problems hauling? It has a aisin spelling??? transmission high output and the Cummings turbo Diesel engine.

In general, the higher the gear ratio such as 4.10, the more improvements you'll see while towing. I really can't speak specifically about any one particular vehicle but so long as you are towing within the confines of the vehicle, the gear ratio should not be a concern. If you feel the current setup is lacking, you can in most cases upgrade to a higher gear ratio but I would give a tuner a shot such as the Edge Juice with Attitude CS2 Performance Tuner part # EP24KR (2019 - 2020). These tuners will boost power delivery as well as transmission shifting while towing for better performance and increased fuel economy. I can't say they will work better for towing than installing new gears but you also won't have to worry about all the pitfalls of shorter gears while daily driving such as significant decreases in fuel economy.

Ok thanks for your reply. So the higher the number the shorter the gears? Will the high output trans called the Aisin make up any differences I may encounter. Exactly how much is the difference between the 4.10 and 3.93?

We cannot quantify the difference easily other than to say a higher numbered gear ration, like the 4.10 will give you greater power to start rolling and to pull loads on up grades, but will result in higher RPMs on the highway and lowered gas mileage. If it were me and would just drive with the 3.93 you have and see if you feel like you need more towing power.
