Can I Replace the Bolt in My Surge Coupler to Secure it in Place?

Question:

Hello I am in the process of converting my surge brakes to electric hydraulic and I need to disable the surge coupler. I have seen where you recommend drilling out the coupler and installing a bolt to hold it into place. My a-75 has the rolling pin already exposed. Could I just replace that with a bolt to keep it from moving back and fourth?

I have a solution for you. I went ahead and reached out to my contact at Dexter Axle, and they recommended replacing the surge coupler with a standard weld on or bolt on straight tongue coupler. This is the safest way. They could not confirm for sure whether drilling a hole/installing a bolt would affect the stability or strength of the coupler.

For a standard coupler, I recommend the Channel Tongue Trailer Coupler # CT-3002-Z along with the 2" Hitch Ball # C40004. If you need a hitch recommendation for your vehicle, I would be happy to provide you a recommendation if you can respond with the year/make/model of your vehicle.
