Replace Trailer Surge Coupler with Straight Coupler on a Trailer With Surge Brakes

Question:

I live in the Ozarks and burn up two sets of brakes a year on my boat trailer with the hilly traveling. I would like to remove actuator coupler and replace with straight coupler and remove brakes. Boat is 2000 pounds 21ft long. I have traveled without brakes before. Your recomendations for straight coupler.

All of that is not necessary. All you have to do is lock out the surge coupler so it cannot move in and out or disconnect the brake lines.

By removing the old coupler you would have to remove the brake lines any way. A surge coupler can still be used in this manner. If you do a lot of towing though I would still use brakes. By removing the trailer brakes you are putting more stress on the tow vehicle brakes and will have to replace them more often.

But if you want to go with a straight tongue coupler I would first need to know the width of the trailers tongue after you remove the surge coupler. Fulton coupler # F346000301 fits a 3 inch wide tongue. I have included a link to the straight tongue couplers we carry. We have models that fit a range of tongues from 1-3/4 inch diameter round tubes to 2, 2-1/2, 2-7/16, and 3 inch wide square tongues, and even on for a 3-1/2 inch round tube. Just let me know what you have and I can make a recommendation.
