Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch for Casita Camper with 500 lb Tongue Weight

Question:

What WD hitch should I use for my new Casita trailer. I believe its a C channel A frame. 1 1/2inch x 3inch Cinch channel, the open side of the channel faces to the outside of the frame And the thickness of the steel is 3/16. Consensus seems to be about 400lb tongue weight. I am adding a tongue tray that holds a 85lb generator.

The Blue Ox # BXW0550 you'd looked at could be a good choice for you. Because the set bolt on the Blue Ox SwayPro is 3 inches long, Blue Ox tells us that the chain hanger brackets use set bolts that attach them to the trailer frame. Because of the length of the bolt, you will be able to run them down far enough so they'll work just fine with a C-Channel frame. The SwayPro is a good choice because it offers sway control as well as weight distribution.

The best practice is to verify the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to tow trailer, including the weight of extras carried on the trailer tongue such as the generator you mentioned. You'll also want to include the weight of anything stowed in the truck bed behind the rear axle as tongue weight. I'll link you to some articles that will show a couple of methods for figuring out the actual tongue weight of your loaded trailer. A tongue weight scale like the etrailer, part # e99044 is an easy tool to help determine the tongue weight.

If you find that the fully loaded tongue weight that includes the weight of anything carried behind the axle in the truck bed is less than 550 lbs, the # BXW0550 SwayPro kit you'd looked at would be a fine choice. If the trailer's tongue weight is greater than 550 lbs, use the next highest rated kit, part # BXW0750 which is good for up to 750 lbs of tongue weight.

I've linked to some product description/demonstration videos that you might find helpful.
