Correct Weight Distribution Hitch For Trailer With 400 lb to 500 lb Tongue Weight

Question:

Hi, I am looking to purchase a wdh with sway control. I have a 2005 Nissan xterra with a tongue weight rating of 500 lb. Do I need to look for a hitch rated at 500 lb or close to that? Ive heard that if you get a hitch rated for more than the vehicle rating is it could cause problems?? Please advise, thanks

We can get you set up with a weight distribution hitch with sway control, and in regards to ratings, your trailer's tongue weight will need to stay at or below the capacity of your Xterra's hitch (500 lbs). The weight distribution hitch is a bit different, because the best system is one in which your trailer's tongue weight falls somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity.

So for example if your tongue weight is somewhere between 400 lbs and 500 lbs the best option would be from Blue Ox:

- Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution with Sway Control # BXW0550

The reason is this system is rated for tongue weights between 350 lbs and 550 lbs so a tongue weight in the 400 lb to 500 lb range would be right in the middle of it. This system will provide you with outstanding sway control and comes with everything required for the install except the hitch ball. The right hitch ball will depend on your trailer's coupler, so you'll need either 2-5/16" Hitch Ball # 19286 or 2" Hitch Ball # A-90.

I have added a link below to a video review for you to check out as well of the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution with Sway Control # BXW0550.
