How to Locate Rattling with the Curt Trailer Hitch # C11077 on a 2011 Honda CR-Z
Question:
I had the guys at the rental trailer place install the Curt 11077 on my 2011 Honda CR-Z. It rattles real bad when Im driving and sounds very loud. I think its hitting the muffler. Ive brought it back but they just say it looks fine. Any suggestions?

It is difficult to determine what is causing a rattling noise without actually being able to see the vehicle, but I can give you some tips on where to look if you are comfortable crawling under your vehicle to look at the hitch.
The alternative would be to take your vehicle to another local trailer hitch installer to have them inspect the installation. If you are anywhere near Wentzville, MO, we would be happy too take a look at it for you.
If you are comfortable looking under your vehicle, I would start at the muffler. The muffler is one of the most common causes for rattling noises when the trailer hitch is involved because the muffler is usually the only component that can move.
Once the hitch is installed, it should not be touching your muffler at all. The mounting bracket of the hitch mounts above the hitch to the vehicle frame, make sure the hitch is not touching the muffler. You could even shake the muffler to see if it hits the hitch when it moves.
If the muffler does not seem to be the issue, check to see if the hitch contacts the bumper fascia. Sometimes this will make a rattling noise at high speeds because the plastic bumper fascia will move and hit the hitch.
Do you notice if the rattling occurs when you have a ball mount or another accessory mounting in your trailer hitch receiver? These types of items can often cause rattling noises, especially on rough terrain or over bumps.
