How To Adjust Curt Round Bar Weight Distribution System
Question:
I have a Curt round bar weight distribution hitch for towing my 6500 lb travel trailer with my 2020 ford f 150 11000 lb max towing cap. When on the scales no trailer, 53 of the truck weight is on the steer axle and 47 is on the drive axle. When loaded and connected with w/d using the 3rd link on the chain the weight percentages change to 47 steer axle and 51 on drive axle. Are these percentages good for safe operation or do I need to increase the weight distribution on the steer axle closer to the unconnected percentage. If I do need to increase should I increase the number of chain links or add washers to move the ball more the the trailer side of the truck. Hitch ball sits about 1/4 inch below coupler. The best way to setup a Curt Weight Distribution System like part # C17051 is using measurements. I don't have hard numbers for you using scales unfortunately, there are too many variables for each vehicle to use this method. The first thing you'll do is take a measurement at the front and rear of the truck unhooked. Then couple the trailer and re-measure. The goal is to get within 1/2" of the original measurements, you can use different chain links until this is done. Furthermore, there should be at least five links between the lift bracket and the spring bar. The number of links should be the same on both bars. Adjust head tilt to accomplish
correct chain length.
