How to Tow Multiple Trailers with a 2003 Acura MDX

Question:

Hi there. I have a 2003 Acura MDX touring with a towing capacity of 4500lbs. I know I need a trailer hitch interested in the CURT 13328 trailer hitch receiver but am unsure about everything else. I have a trailer I usually use to pick up but am thinking of upgrading the trailer. Would I need to wait to purchase the ball mount for it? We have a couple 4- wheelers that I wanted to tow not at once. Can you please recommend what I should purchase? Thanks again for all your help.

We have you covered here. The Curt Class III, part # 13328, is definitely a good choice for your 2003 Acura MDX. There are some things that need to be taken into account, though.

Though the Curt hitch has the highest towing capacity for your vehicle, the only way it can handle 4500 lbs is to be combined with a weight distribution (WD) system. With a WD system, it can tow up to 5000 pounds. Without one, it can only get up to 3500 lbs.

For your WD system, I recommend the Blue Ox TrackPro Weight Distribution w/ Sway Control, part # BLU36FR. This WD system is going to serve multiple purposes for you. First, it will enable your Curt hitch to tow up to 5000 pounds as I said before. Second, it has an in-built sway control, which will help stabilize all of your trailers. Third, it has a 7-hole shank, ensuring that you don't need to buy multiple ball mounts for your different trailer heights. You can adjust it to match the height of each trailer. It has a 2" ball.

Of course, if it's only one trailer that's getting up to the 4500-lb mark, then you might also want to get an adjustable ball mount. I say this because though the TrackPro can be used with multiple trailers, it may be cumbersome to constantly un-attach and re-attach it to other trailers. If your other trailers are under that 3500-lb limit of the Curt hitch without the WD system, I suggest getting the Weigh Safe 2-Ball Mount w/ Built-In Scale, part # WS6-2. In the case that the WD system is only needed for one trailer, the TrackPro can stay on that trailer and the lighter trailers can be used with the Weigh Safe. Just make sure those lighter ones are under 3500 pounds.

I've linked to a video review of the Weigh Safe for you to look at.
