Weight Distribution Recommendation for a 2010 Toyota Highlander and Jayco 23B Trailer

Question:

I have a 2010 Toyota Highlander v6 ... is this adequate to pull a Jayco 23b trailer? The manual for the Toyota indicates up to 500lb tongue weight and 5000lb GVW. What kind of controller/hitch would offer the maximum sway/other control re above suv/trailer combo?

Checking the owners manual is always a good first step. There may also be information in the manual regarding the use of weight distribution so I would take a look through the towing section again to determine if there are any specific recommendations from Toyota.

To use weight distribution you will need to have a 2 inch hitch receiver that is rated for use with weight distribution. This information could be in the owners manual and there should also be a sticker on the hitch with capacity information for use with weight distribution if the hitch is rated for it. I looked through the owners manual online and could not find information on weight distribution but I did see a brief mention of using sway control. I would contact a Toyota dealer to determine if weight distribution can be used.

I looked up some information on the Jayco 23B. It appears there are different years so more specific information about the trailer will help with a better recommendation. From what I found the weight of the trailer will be very close to the capacity of the vehicle you have mentioned.

Weight distribution will not increase the amount of weight the vehicle can tow. The V6 Highlander with factory tow package can tow up 5,000 pounds. Given the trailer weighs nearly that much you could easily exceed the capacity of the vehicle.

When choosing weight distribution you want a system and encompasses or exceeds the trailer tongue weight when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. If the Jayco trailer weighs around 5,000 pounds then the tongue weight, if at 10 percent of gross trailer weight, would be 500 pounds.

A system rated for up to 600 pounds, like # RP66540, would be a good choice. This system comes with everything you will need except a properly sized ball. Use # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch or # A-90 for a 2 inch. To add sway control use # 83660.

I have included a link to our FAQ article on weight distribution and sway control for you to view.
