Recommended Weight Distribution With Sway Control on 2016 Toyota Highlander With 3000 Pound Trailer

Question:

Hello. We have just gotten a 2016 Highlander V6 AWD which is rated to tow 5000#. We are getting an Escape Travel Trailer that Will weigh about 3000# when loaded and should have a tongue weight of 300# + or -. The manual for the Highlander states that if the trailer is over 2000# that a sway control device should be used. Can you recommend a suitable model please?

A weight distribution system is recommended anytime your trailer's weight is at least half of your tow vehicle's weight. So with your 2016 Toyota Highlander towing a 3000 pound trailer, I definitely recommend using weight distribution with sway control, instead of just sway control.

To choose a system you need to use your 300 pounds of tongue weight combined with the amount of weight stored in the back of your Highlander behind the rear axle. You want to make sure you have a system that is rated high enough, or it won't do its job, and not too high, or it will make your entire ride very rough and rigid.

With your tongue weight added to the weight in your vehicle, a system rated for 400 pounds is a good choice. The Reese Steadi-Flex # 66557 uses friction pads very similar to automobile brake pads for sway control. It also clamps onto your trailer's frame and doesn't use chains making it easier to install than some other systems. If you feel like the 400 pound system isn't enough because you're loading a lot behind the rear axle of your Highlander you can go with the 600 pound system # RP66558.

Both systems include a shank but you will need a hitch ball # 63845.

For a system that I only sway control you can use the Reese Friction Sway Control Kit # 83660 and bracket # RP26003. Keep in mind with this type of system you will need to disconnect it while backing up or you can damage it. You'll also want to disconnect it while driving in inclement weather.

If you also need wiring for your travel trailer the Curt T-Connector # 56042 will work for you if you have the tow package. If by chance you don't have the tow package then the Curt # C56217 will work. Both harness plug directly into the Highlander's wiring.
