Parts Needed to Switch from Surge Disc Brake Actuator to Electric Over Hydraulic

Question:

Hi, I just bought a loadrite trailer with surge disc brakes and the following coupler - http://www.loadrite.com/trailer-parts/brake-components/16-5k-actuator-w-2-516-coupler-disc-brakes-2/ . What parts do I need to convert this to electric controlled brakes? The wiring is using a 5 flat. thanks

To switch from your current surge brake system to an electric over hydraulic system you'll need an EOH actuator, a brake controller and possibly a new coupler; you'll also need to re-wire the trailer so that it has a 7 way plug. Additionally, if you don't already have a 7 way plug on your tow vehicle, you will need to add one using a kit like the # ETBC7.

For the actuator you can use the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi # HBA16, which is designed for disc brakes and will provide you with improved functionality compared to the response of surge brakes. For the brake controller I recommend using the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195, which will provide you with proportional braking for your trailer. I really love the easy to read LCD screen on this controller and it gives you a lot of flexibility in how and where you can mount it because of the 360 degree mounting plane.

To replace the plug on your trailer I recommend using the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit w/ Junction Box and RV Style Connector # HS381-9000 since it comes with a junction box to help make your wiring nice and clean. If your Load Rite actuator cannot be locked out you'll want to replace it with a standard coupler like the Demco # DM16080-95 which fits on 3" tongues. I've also linked our entire selection of standard couplers for you to have a look at, as well.

Once you determine the best solution for your coupler, you'll just need to run the brake line that was previously going to the actuating coupler to the electric over hydraulic actuator. I have attached two FAQ articles on adding electric over hydraulic disc and drum brakes for you to check out.
