Factory Trailer Brake Controller Vs Aftermarket for a 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500

Question:

Hello: I have a 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 Custom Trail Boss edition. The vehicle came from the factory with a trailering package but did not have a trailer brake adjuster installed. I ordered a GM GENUINE brake adjuster - Part: 84488395. I did not have the part installed at a Chevy dealer, but the installer told me that the computer needed flashed as the adjuster is not being recognized by the vehicle. Chevy indicated that could not be done. Is that the case??

In order to install a factory trailer brake controller on a 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 you will indeed need to have the computer re-flashed at the dealer in addition to purchasing the actual controller. That said, for a much more reliable and cost effective solution I recommend going aftermarket. These typically last much longer and preform better (more settings) than the factory controller not to mention being a fraction of the cost in the end. The Redarc Tow-Pro Elite Trailer Brake Controller part # RED44FR will have a hidden look just like the factory controller when installed and will largely outperform it. In order to make for a plug and play install you'll need the Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter for Electric Brake Controllers part # 3064-P and Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter for Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness part # 331-TPH-017.
