Recommended Trailer Hitch Receiver, Wiring Harness and Brake Controller for 2018 Mazda CX-5

Question:

Hi, I have a 2018 Mazda CX-5 Touring with no factory installed towing gear. Id like to set it up with a 2 class 3 hitch receiver that looks as unobtrusive as possible, plus the wiring and mounting so I can tow either a utility trailer that uses a 4 way flat connector or a small camper that uses a 7 way connector with electric brakes. It seems like the Draw-Tite 76138 and the Curt 13315 are the options for the receiver. It also looks like Curt and Tekonsha make wiring harnesses with modulator for the 4 pin flat, and you have some kits that include wiring harnesses for both 4 and 7 pin. I guess Id also need a mount for the 4 and 7 pin brackets. Im new at this and getting a little confused. What do you recommend that I get for the entire set of parts Ill need? Thanks!

We can get you set up with the trailer hitch receiver, wiring harness and brake controller you need for your 2018 Mazda CX-5, starting with the hitch, and for that I recommend the Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76138.

I prefer the Draw-Tite over the Curt Trailer Hitch # C13315 or etrailer Trailer Hitch # e98902 due to the Draw-Tite's larger capacities which speak to its overall strength, but essentially the two are otherwise interchangeable so you can go with the least expensive option and won't be at any disadvantage. I have added a link to a video install for you to check out as well.

Since you mentioned you would be towing trailers with a 4-way and a 7-way you will need to add a 7-way, and to install it the first thing you will need to add is a 4-way, the T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4-Pole Flat Trailer Connector # 118746.

You should note this is designed to store in your spare tire area so you'll need to find a way to get the connector underneath your Mazda, possibly by enlarging a hole underneath the spare tire. After that, to get the 7-way connector, circuit breakers, and the rest of the hardware needed to install a brake controller you need the Universal Installation Kit for Trailer Brake Controller # ETBC7.

For a brake controller I recommend the Brake EVN # TK63VR.

This is an easy-to-use, highly effective proportional controller that is going to serve you very well but at a lesser cost than other "name" brands. To install this you will also need the Brake Control Plug-In Harness # 20127.

And for mounting the 7-way, because the hitch is recessed under your Mazda's fascia, you will need to use the Curt Easy Mount Bracket # C58000.

I have added links to video installs and reviews for you to check out as well.
