Parts Needed to Install Brake Controller in 2013 Subaru Outback with 4-Way

Question:

I have a question about trailer plugs. I currently have a standard 4 flat on my 2013 Subaru Outback. I am renting a trailer that has a 7-way plug and electronic brakes. My question is do i need a brake controller inside the cab or can i get away with just the part # ETBC7.

The # ETBC7 would just cover the wiring for a brake controller and the adapter to convert the 4-way to a 7-way so it would not be all that you'd need. You'd need to use it and a brake controller like the BRAKE-EVN part # TK63VR to activate the trailer brakes. Another easier option (more expensive) would be the Curt Echo Mobile part # C51180 which plugs into a 7-way and once synced to your smart phone is ready to tow.

To convert the 4-way to a 7-way so that you can install the brake controller only requires the 7-way adapter kit part # ETBC7L. The 4-way of this plugs into the 4-way of your vehicle and once you run the included wiring and breaker up to the vehicle's positive battery post it's active enough to allow the Echo to function. This saves you from having to hardwire in a brake controller which requires tapping into the brake signal of your vehicle and running a few other wires too.
