Parts Needed to Add Electric Brakes on Trailer With 3,500 lb Axle

Question:

Hi, I have a 5x10 utility trailer with a Dexter 3500 axle. I am looking for the parts I would need to add electric brakes. I imagine I need the right and left brake assemblies Item # 23-26-27 and hopefully an easy to install wiring kit that will convert my existing 4 pin plug to a 7 pin with brakes. Can you suggest the part #s for this?

We do have what you need to install electric brakes on your trailer, and so long as your current hub and drums are 10" diameter x 2-1/4" wide (which is standard for 3,500 lb axles) and you have a 4-bolt brake mounting flange such # 4-35 you can use the Dexter Electric Trailer Brake Kit # 23-26-27.

If you don't have that brake mounting flange you would need to get it welded onto your axle beam. Other parts you need for this are the Brake Adjustment Spoon # W80630 and Hopkins Engager Push-To-Test Trailer Breakaway Kit # 20400.

For the wiring you will need the Trailer Wiring 7-Way Upgrade Kit # e99011.

This kit includes the 7-way, junction box, ring terminals, and wire loom you need. You'll also want 10 Gauge Primary Wire # 10-1-1 and I recommend the Hopkins Deluxe Trailer Wiring Installation Kit # HM51020 to cover all your bases for tape, zip ties and a wire tool.

I have added a link to a help article for you to check out on parts needed for electric brakes, as well as links to video installs of the brakes, breakaway kit and junction box to take a look at.
