How To Fix Tire Clearance Issues When Using 185/80-13 Tires

Question:

I have an 04 Karavan holding a 195 Bayliner. The tires that came on it from the previous owner are St185/80D13 but that have rubbed against the wheel cover and I blew a tire last night coming home. Should I switch to a 175 to avoid the rub since they can still hold the weight of the Bayliner?

The recommended clearance for a trailer tire is at minimum 4" from the top to the bottom of the fender. The 185/80-13 tires you have now measure 24.4" diameter x 7.2" wide. The 175/80-13 tires you are wanting measure 24" diameter x 7" wide. Therefore, you will gain about a 1/2" of clearance. For this, I recommend the Provider ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire part # TTWTRTM1758013C which is a radial ply therefore will run cooler on the highway and last longer. This is the smallest size without going to a smaller wheel, so this is what I recommend.

If you still continue to have issues, the leaf springs could be worn, and need replaced.
