Should the Original Wheels and Spare Tire Be Replaced on a 1989 Jayco King 6 Pop Up Trailer
Question:
I need to replace a tire 20.5x8 - 10 on my 1989 Jayco King 6 pop up trailer. Because the trailer is now over 20 years old I bought it new Im wondering if I should also replace my spare, which has never been used and has been covered the whole time. Also, is there any need to replace the wheels? They have never been banged up - just a bit rusty. I was thinking Id just paint them.

I would definitely recommend replacing your spare tire if it is the original spare tire from 1989. Trailer tires typically need to be changed every 6 years or when worn, so I would bet that your spare tire is in no shape to help support your trailer. Even though a tire might not be worn, dry rot will weaken the tire tread and sidewall overtime leading to tire failure.
The wheels on the other hand only need to be replaced if they have been damaged. I would recommend inspecting each wheel for dents, cracks or bent sections. As long as the wheel seems to be in good condition, a little bit of rust will not harm anything.
