Will A Hitch With 1-1/4 to 2 Adapter Carry My Cargo Basket
Question:
I plan on ordering this I bought a 2 in receiver adapter for my cargo carrier. Will this product make a 5hr trip with 170lbs included the carrier weight? With the 2 inch receiver adapter

I would not recommend it. It's important to know that 1-1/4 to 2 inch hitch adapters decrease the hitch or vehicle tongue weight capacity, whichever is lowest, by 50 percent. The Curt Trailer Hitch Receiver # C11540 has a tongue weight of 200lbs maximum making this class one hitch only capable of 100 pounds, or less, tongue weight. Carrying 170lbs would not be recommended.
A cargo carrier that fits a 1-1/4" hitch like the 17x46 Curt Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Steel - 500 lbs
Item # C18145 would be a better option.
You could look at lessening the weight load by adding more in the vehicle or look to the roof with a cargo box like the Yakima RocketBox Pro 14 Rooftop Cargo Box # Y07192 within weight limits as potential solutions.
Another reason we discourage the use of 2 inch accessories in 1-1/4 inch trailer hitch receivers is that the adapter places the carrier farther away from the rear of the vehicle and hitch. This creates additional torque that 1-1/4 inch hitches, especially Class I hitches, are not designed to handle.
Included is a great Help Article with more information on hitch adapters.
