Can 2016 Toyota Tundra With 6-1/2 Foot Bed Tow 5th Wheel Trailer and Parts Needed
Question:
2016 toyota Tundra 4.6L SR5 6-1/2 foot bed. Looking to see if it is possible for me to be able to pull a 5th wheel with my truck? Have heard of some ultra light 5th wheels, but overall am looking for max available sq ft for towing capacity of my vehicle. Thanks

Yes, a 2016 Toyota Tundra with a 6-1/2 foot bed can absolutely tow a 5th wheel trailer. The exact capacity of your truck is going to depend on a number of factors, including whether or not you have the towing package, 2WD or 4WD and even your fuel tank size. I took a look at the owner's manual and there are 25 different combination for your bed size alone, so I recommend checking out your manual starting on page 162 to find out exactly how much you can tow based on the specs of your Tundra.
In order to tow a 5th wheel trailer you are going to need a sliding fifth wheel hitch, base rails and a wiring harness.
You need a sliding hitch because you have a short bed and this will allow you to tow a trailer and make sharp turns without the trailer crashing into your Tundra's cab. The 5th wheel hitch I highly recommend for your 2016 Tundra is the Curt A16 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R16 Slider # C16521 because it will give you a comfortable towing experience and is easier to use than other hitches. The A16 will give you a secure connection with your trailer because of its interlocking dual jaw system that wraps totally around the king pin. This is what results in a ride being much more comfortable than with other hitches that have a lesser jaw system - the king pin won't be loose in the jaws when you use the A16 so there will not be the rigid back-and-forth movement that can cause a choppy ride.
It also has a handy indicator system which will let you know if the jaws on the hitch are ready to couple, uncouple or tow. This color-coded system makes the process of hooking up or disconnecting your trailer much simpler. For base rails and brackets I highly recommend the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for Toyota Tundra # C16468-204 because it does not require any drilling into your Tundra's frame rails to install. This is not only great for your truck but also means the installation is going to be simpler and take much less time than a universal kit. Using this kit will benefit you whether you are doing the install yourself (saving hours) or having a professional do it (less install time equals less expensive labor costs).
Then for a 5th wheel wiring harness you will need the Curt 5th Wheel/Gooseneck Custom Wiring Harness # C56000 which is going to give you the ability to power your trailer's lights.
I have added links to video reviews and installation instructions of the A16 Hitch # C16521, Installation Kit # C16468-204 and wiring harness for you to check out as well.
