What Weight Do I Need To Consider When Carrying Bikes On A Class I Hitch

Question:

Just want to make sure I understand correctly...for a hitch mounted rack with bikes loaded, I just need to make sure the total weight rack + bikes does not exceed the 200lb TW of this hitch. Is that right? Tongue weight and total load of bike rack on Mazda 3 hatch

Yes, the Curt Hitch Receiver - Custom Fit part # C98BR for the 2019 Mazda 3 hatchback has a 200 lb tongue weight capacity so you want to make sure the bike rack weight plus the weight of the bikes does not exceed 200 lbs.

You also want to make sure the bike rack is a Class I compatible bike rack so it will fit into the hitch. We also do not recommend to carry more than 2 bikes on a Class I hitch because more than 2 bikes can put too much leverage on the setup which can cause damage to the vehicle's frame.

If you tell me which bike rack you have or are looking at I can let you know if it's compatible.

If you do not have a Class I bike rack, I recommend Thule Helium Pro 2 Bike Rack part # TH9042PRO because it only weighs 19 lbs compared to other hanging bike racks that can weigh up to 40 lbs. The Helium's lightweight construction will also allow you to carry more weight in bikes and will be easy to take in and out of the hitch. It also comes with a bike and hitch lock so there is not a need to purchase them separately.
