How to Decide if Short Part of Andersen Ultimate Adapter Should Face Front or Rear of Bed

How can I tell if I can use short side toward the front

In general you'll want the shorter side of the Andersen Ultimate Connection # AM3200 towards the rear of the truck bed if you have a short bed truck or towards the front of the truck if you have a long bed truck. That's typically how the two orientations are picked. This allows you to have more clearance when needed (short side to rear of truck bed) which is commonly needed for short bed trucks.
You can also try both orientations to see which gives you the best clearance and go from there as well.
