Troubleshooting Trailer Wiring for 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe with No Power to Pins

Question:

i own a 2007 santa fe. The power to the plug in is currently not there. It is intermittent. The manual does not identify a trailer plug fuse. I need help identifying the fuse or relay responsible for the power outage. Have you experienced this problem before?

Is it factory trailer wiring or aftermarket? Most likely the converter box has an internal short now and is in need of replacing as this is the common problem. You can test the converter box but most likely it's time for new wiring with the part # 118258 which does have an inline fuse so if you had this kit you could check there if present.

What you will want to do is test the wires going into the box of the converter box for voltage with a circuit tester like the # PTW2993 to see if there is voltage going into the box when the taillight functions of your vehicle are applied, and then test the output side of the box to see if the current is making it through the converter. If not then the problem is that the converter box has shorted itself out and would need to be replaced.

Before you replace it you will want to inspect the wiring of your trailer to see if you can find anything that would cause the box to short out like corrosion or cut/exposed wiring. These boxes don't usually go out unless there is a short on the trailer that takes it out.

If there isn't input voltage for the converter then the problem is the wiring of the wiring kit. You will need to check to make sure it's making a solid connection to the correct circuits.

What is the purpose of the converter box on the Trailer Light harness for a 2007 Haundi Santa Fe.?

The 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe has a separate wiring system, which means the brake and turn signals are sent along separate wires. Trailer wiring combines these two circuits, so a converter box is needed on the harness to combine the brake and turn signals coming from the Santa Fe so that it's compatible with the trailer when hooked up.
