What Weight Capacity Needs to be Considered for Roof Rack Style Roof Tent

Question:

I am wanting to buy a tent that sets on the top of my roof. I am confused about the weight limits on my roof. Say for instance the 2018 says 101.9lbs. Does this mean that once i put a rack on my car and attach the tent to my roof that i can assume i would not be able to sleep in said tent. I am wanting to buy a Tapui Roof Tent for my car. But i am confused as to roof weight on my vehicle.

Most roof rack weight capacities are listed as dynamic capacities which means it's the weight you could put on the rack while on the road which will have bumps and valleys where the cargo weight would be exaggerated. The capacity you'd need to consider when dealing with a roof top tent like the Yakima SkyRise HD part # Y07437 is a static capacity which is the capacity it can carry when the vehicle is stopped.

So you'd need to contact the manufacturer of the vehicle you have and ask them what the static capacity might be.

The SkyRise requires a minimum dynamic capacity of 165 lbs. I attached a review video for more info on the SkyRise as well.
