Can a 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch be Installed on a 2006 GMC Sierra with an Underbed Gooseneck Hitch

Question:

I have an 06 gmc 3500 dually with a unagoose ball hitch. Will the unagoose need to be rmoved to mount the Q-20 or are the brackets to mount it to the truck frame adjustable to make up the thickness of the unagoose brackets?

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to install a 5th wheel trailer hitch in your 2006 GMC Sierra as long as the gooseneck hitch is installed. The problem is that a 5th wheel hitch installation kit will require the same or some of the same mounting locations as the gooseneck hitch so they would interfere with each other.

What you can do is use an adapter to fit on the 5th wheel trailer to use with the gooseneck hitch. There are a couple of different options. If you have a Lippert 0719, 1621, 1621HD on your trailer, you can use the Reese Goose Box, # RP85FR. Or, if you have a Lippert 0115, 1116, or 1716 pin box, # RP94716-61301.

The Goose Box will replace the king pin on the pin box with a gooseneck coupler. It is also air cushioned for a smooth ride. I have included a link to a video review for you.

There is also a more temporary solution. You can use an adapter that fits around the king pin on the trailer and bolts to the bottom of the pin box. Take a look at the Ranch Hitch, # AM3100. This coupler is height adjustable from 11-3/4 inches to 14-2/4 inches depending on the height you need.

To determine what height you need, park truck and trailer on level ground. Measure from the top of the ball in the truck bed to the bottom of the pin plate where the king pin is attached. This measurement is the height you will need. I also recommend adding the safety cables, # AM3109, if you go with the Ranch Hitch.
