I was able to find that your 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 4.0 liter engine has a 5,000 lb trailer weight towing capacity. Since your trailer weighs 3,500 lbs you'd easily be safe to tow that.

A weight distribution system is recommend anytime your trailer is over half the weight of the tow vehicle so it would be recommended for you.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

For a trailer that weighs 3,500 the Equal-i-zer kit part # EQ37060ET would be what I recommend. This kit is considered by many to be the most effective and best WD system around and this has a tongue weight range of 200-600 lbs so it would work great for you in that regard as well.
