Troubleshooting Trailer Brake Controller of 2014 Ram 2500 that Blows Fuses

Question:

I see on here that this may be a Ford only product. I have a 2014 Ram 2500 and I keep blowing fuses. I need something to simplify whether its the truck or the trailer. Im thinking maybe my electric brakes on my trailer may be causing it but this would help to narrow down the search if it worked. So will this work on OEM Ram or not? If not what will?

The Tekonsha 7-Way, RV-Style Tester for Brake Controllers # 6562 doesn't always work with every brake controller we've found. There's a chance it may work on your truck but since I can't guarantee that it's hard for me to recommend this for you based on what you are looking for. If your OEM brake controller fuse keeps blowing when you connect a trailer to it and apply the brakes it's most likely the trailer having a short. This is commonly where the problem is and it's typically exposed wire on the trailer for this circuit touching the frame of the trailer. It sometimes can be corrosion in the trailer wiring connectors too so you should check there.

You can use a circuit tester like the part # PTW2993 to test the output pin of the 7-way which is the pin in the 5:00 position. If you can test for voltage there successfully without blowing a fuse that would confirm the problem being on the trailer. If not, then it's the wiring on the vehicle side which you'd need to track down in the same way.
