Parts Recommended to Flat Tow 1991 Jeep Wrangler
Question:
Can I tow my 1991 Jeep Wrangler with 2013 Grand Cherokee Laredo?

So long as your 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a trailer hitch and wiring you can tow your 1991 Jeep Wrangler. According to the owner's manual your Grand Cherokee has a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs (for a 3.6L engine), 7,200 lbs (5.7L engine and 4WD) or 7,400 lbs (5.7L engine and 2WD); and your '91 Wrangler falls underneath these weights, though you need to verify the towing capacities and your Wrangler's weight.
For your Grand Cherokee I recommend the Curt # C13182 due to its 6,000 lb capacity and for a wiring harness to add a 4-way either # 118425 if your '13 Grand Cherokee does NOT have the factory tow package or # 118384 if your Grand Cherokee has the tow package. For either harness please keep in mind it may be necessary to see a local Jeep dealer to activate the tow package wiring circuit.
There are a number of parts needed in order to flat tow your 1991 Jeep Wrangler, which I'll list for you, and you will need to note which bumper your Wrangler has to get the correct base plate kit
- Base Plate Kit - Standard Factory Bumper: Roadmaster Crossbar-Style Base Plate Kit # 1409-3 (This steel bumper has a flat top and face, which the 1409-3 brackets bolt to. However, some versions incorporate bumpers without a flat face and top which prevent the use of these brackets so please note the bumper your Wrangler has)
OR
- Base Plate Kit - Off-Road bumper with 1 Inch D-Ring Bumper Mounts: Adapter for Jeep D-Ring Bumper Mounts to Roadmaster Motor Home Mount Tow Bars # RM-035-1
- Tow Bar: Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain, Non-Binding Tow Bar # RM-522
- Safety Chains: RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables # RM-643
- Wiring Kit: Roadmaster Universal Hy-Power Diode Wiring Kit # RM-154
- Supplemental Braking System: SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO Supplemental Braking System # SM99251
Base plates are vehicle-specific and both Roadmaster options are a fit for your Wrangler so long as you choose the one that is correct for your specific bumper. The Falcon tow bar is a great option because it has long arms which make it easier to maneuver when towing; the accompanying photo is of this tow bar being used with a Wrangler.
The wiring kit is designed to effectively prevent electrical feedback to keep your Jeep's electrical system safe, and the SMI Stay-IN-Play DUO is highly recommended because it is a one-time install which you can leave in so you'll never have to activate or deactivate it.
Finally, you may need a high-low adapter so you can tow your Wrangler level. If you take a look at the linked help article it will help you determine which adapter you might need I have added a link to your selection of high-low adapters as well as instruction manuals, video reviews and installations for you to take a look at.
