I took a look at the owner's manual for your 2001 Chevy Silverado 2500 and was unable to find any information concerning specific grades of hills and there isn't any type of specific formula that is used which has this information.

The only thing mentioned in your owner's manual was that going up steep grades would cause overheating so I strongly recommend using an accessory transmission cooler. The best option is the Derale Series 8000 # D13504 because it is a plate-fin cooler that is 11" wide x 12" tall x 7/8" deep and the general rule of transmission coolers is the larger the better. A plate-fin cooler is one of the most efficient types because it continuously agitates fluids along its chambers, which helps it cool faster.

It is possible you will need Derale Radiator Adapter Fittings for GM # D13018 with this cooler but only if your Silverado has 5/8" hex on the trans line.

I have added a pair of informative articles on transmission coolers for you to check out as well.
