Is RockyMounts MonoRail a Quality Bike Rack

Question:

Hi, I am looking at your RockyMounts MonoRail 2 Bike Platform Rack - 2inch Hitches - Tilting - Wheel Mount Item # RKY10004. I have a 2014 VW touareg mid size SUV. Would this be a good choice? The customer reviews of this rack appear to be quite positive. Is this consistent with your experience? Finally, is there another rack in this category and general price range you would suggestion for comparison to the RockyMounts? Thank you!

The RockyMounts MonoRail 2 Bike Platform Rack # RKY10004 is a high-quality bike rack and would be a very good choice because it gives you a lot of quality-of-life features. It is a wheel mounted rack which won't make contact with the frames of your bikes and you only need to pull a lever to fold and tilt the rack. The MonoRail is also relatively light at just 38 lbs so it is easy to handle but still has a capacity of 60 lbs per bike.

The only requirements to use this rack is that your 2014 VW Touareg has a 2" hitch like the Draw-Tite # 75950. Additionally you will want to be sure there is enough room for you to use the MonoRail's fold-up feature.

To do that you simply need to measure from the center of the hitch pin hole on the hitch to the edge of your bumper, and if that measures 6 inches or less you will be able to fold the RockyMounts MonoRail # RKY10004 when you are not using it to carry bikes.

If you need more room than 6 inches then you can check out the Saris Freedom # SA4412B which has many of the same features as the MonoRail but is 12" from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closest part of the rack when it is folded. The biggest difference is that the Freedom is a frame-mounted rack so there would be contact with the frames of your bikes when they are being carried.

Both racks do come with hitch locks to secure the bike rack to your Touareg and cable locks to secure your bikes to the rack but the wheel mount of the MonoRail # RKY10004 makes it a notch better than the Freedom for many bike enthusiasts.
