Cargo Box Recommendation for a 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon with Factory Roof Rack

Question:

I have a 2014 Subaru Outback with the non adjustable factory rack and crossbars. I only have 51 1/4 inch front clearance measuring from the very front of the 2 and 1/4 inch front cross bar. So what roof box am I going to be able to get and still be able to open the back hatch of my car?

The most important measurement needed when choosing a cargo box for a vehicle with a roof rack like your 2014 Subaru Outback Wagon is crossbar spacing which is measured from the center of the front crossbar to the center of the rear crossbar. The rear crossbar on your Outback Wagon has two different positions which is 30" back from the front crossbar on center and 39-1/2 " back from the front crossbar on center. Most cargo boxes will adjust to a range of different crossbar spacing.

If you are looking for a large cargo box that will work with your crossbar spacing and clear the rear hatch then I recommend the Thule Pulse Large Rooftop Cargo Box part # TH615. This box offers up to 16 cubic feet of storage, has an aerodynamic design for reduced wind noise, luggage straps to secure your cargo, and locks to protect it. I have even attached a review video of this box installed on a similar 2011 Subaru Outback Wagon for you.
